Electrical Conductivity of KCl?H 2 O Fluids in the Crust and Lithospheric Mantle

چکیده
Evidence from diamond inclusions suggests that KCl-bearing fluids may be abundant in the subcratonic mantle and these also cause local anomalies of high electrical conductivity. We therefore measured conductivity aqueous containing 6.96, 0.74 0.075 wt% KCl using a hydrothermal anvil cell to 2.5 GPa 675°C, with piston-cylinder apparatus 5 900°C. found below 550°C, increasing pressure generally decreases solution conductivity, while at higher temperatures effect is opposite. However, pressures, H2O smaller than for NaCl, possibly due hydration shell collapse. The experimental data are described by two numerical models. first model (R2 = 0.999), preferable crustal conditions: log ? ?2.03 + 25.0 × T?1 0.923 c 0.990 ? ?0, where S/m, T temperature K, concentration wt%, density pure water (in g/cm3) given temperature. ?0 limiting molar S·cm2·mol?1): 1,377 – 1,082 6,883 102 2,471 105 T?2. second 0.986), applicable lithospheric mantle: ?1.52 357 0.865 1.72 same equation ?0. latter shows already traces fluid account mantle.

Mapping the Distribution of Fluids in the Crust and Lithospheric Mantle Utilizing Geophysical Methods
Geophysical imaging provides a unique perspective on metasomatism, because it allows the present day fluid distribution in the Earth’s crust and upper mantle to be mapped. This is in contrast to geological studies that investigate midcrustal rocks have been exhumed and fluids associated with metasomatism are absent. The primary geophysical methods that can be used are (a) electromagnetic method...
متن کاملElectrical Conductivity of the Neutron Star Crust at Low Temperatures
The electrical conductivity of the neutron star crust at low temperatures is calculated by taking into account the mixing of the electron wave functions due to the interaction with the crystal lattice of atomic nuclei. We show that the previously existed model of exponential reduction of the electron–ion scattering rate can lead to an overestimation of the electrical conductivity by several ord...
متن کاملWater and the Electrical Conductivity of the Lunar Mantle
Introduction. The electrical conductivity of minerals increases with temperature and impurity content [e.g., 1]. Aluminum in orthopyroxene is one such impurity that has been invoked to fit the electrical conductivity of the deep interior of the Moon while maintaining subsolidus temperatures [2-4]. However, the required bulk alumina abundance in pyroxene is comparable to that inferred for the en...
متن کاملdetermination of the electrical conductivity and temperature of the upper mantle using geomagnetic quiet-daily variations
the electrical conductivity of the earth is its physical parameter, which can be studied in global scales. the investigations of the earth's electrical conductivity are based on geomagnetic field variations. time variations of the geomagnetic field consist of long-term and short-term (transient) variations. external sources induce electric currents into the earth. the induced electric curr...
